The German "Energiewende" in the global context

Germany’s energy transition is high on the political agenda. However, the so-called “Energiewende” still has a long way to go if it is to become a global model for low-carbon transformation. What is expected from the German “Energiewende”? Panelists from academia, science and practice will address this question.

Germany’s energy transition is high on the political agenda. However, the so-called “Energiewende” still has a long way to go if it is to become a global model for low-carbon transformation. What is expected from the German “Energiewende”? Is energy transition primarily a technical or a sociopolitical challenge? And how can the international community organise joint learning on technical and political solutions for sustainable transformation?

These and other questions will be addressed by our panelists (listed in alphabetical order):

- Claudia Kemfert, Head of Department “Energy, Transportation, Environment”, German Institute for Economic Research / Deutsches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (DIW)

- Dirk Messner (moderator), Director, German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) & Co-Chair, German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU)

- Nebojsa Nakicenovic, Deputy Director, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) & Member of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU)

- Udo Niehage, Senior Vice President, Head of Government Affairs Berlin & Company Representative for the German Energy Transition, Siemens AG

- Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director, Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) & Director, The Earth Institute at Columbia University

There will be plenty of time for audience interventions and participants are invited to join us for a networking reception afterwards.

The event is co-organised by the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). The SDSN was founded in 2012 under the auspices of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and connects institutions and key individuals from developing, emerging and industrialised countries. The DIE has been an official network member since 2013.
