We may be the dexterous species, but our capacity for communication makes us essentially human.The study of human language led the way toward the revolution of embodiment, the realization that cognition is strongly contingent upon our bodily immersion in an environment to which we are coupled through sensory and motor processes.
The embodiment stance to human communication extends the scientific approach to human language by adding a new emphasis on the grounding of language in the ongoing perception of the scene.The emergence of language during development is contingent, in this view, on the immersion of the child in an environment shared with speakers. Gesture and other non-linguistic cues are tightly coupled into language processing in the here and now of human communication.
Our aim will be to advance the interdisciplinary interchanges between these diverse fields with diverse methods around the shared problem of embodied communication.
