International Conference on Infrastructures and Cooperation in e-Science and e-Humanities

The International Conference on Infrastructures and Cooperation in e-Science and e-Humanities invites submissions that address current questions and solutions related to technologies or applications as well as their implications on the conduct of science. It aims at investigating digitally enhanced academic activities from a technological as well as social scientific perspective.

From the very beginning, when John Taylor introduced “e-science”, the term did not only comprise infrastructure as an enabler of scientific discovery, but also “global collaboration in key areas of science” (Taylor 1999). Today, almost fifteen years later, as computer technologies and digital tools pervade the academic world, it is time to ask what changes are implied when an “e” is added to science?
The International Conference on Infrastructures and Cooperation in e-Science and e-Humanities invites submissions that address current questions and solutions related to technologies or applications as well as their implications on the conduct of science. It aims at investigating digitally enhanced academic activities from a technological as well as social scientific perspective.
Relevant topics and questions include, but are not limited to the following fields:
Invention, design and implementation of information and communication technologies to enable, enhance or empower academic activities (field 1):
What are the typical characteristics of technologies and tools that have been developed particularly for the academic context? Which special features do they have to offer?
Which technologies stimulate and support interdisciplinary and/or collaborative scientific work?
Which technology trends are emerging? How will technologies form the research landscape during the next years?

Analysis of academic processes, business models, and needs (field 2):
What technologies and tools are used in different disciplines and in what stage of the scientific work process? What are the relevant experiences of scientists?
How can the process of academic knowledge production be measured? What does data tell about scientific progress and success?
What are working strategies of error control when processing huge amounts of data with the help of supercomputers?
What is needed or what makes open access a success story?
Is there a perceived need by the institutions for an e-science support of their scientists?

Social and cultural influences and outcomes related to the use of technology in academic activities (field 3):
How do technologies affect and change the academic work process?
What is the epistemological contribution digital technologies and tools do afford? Where are the limits?
What are new requirements scientists have to face when working with digital technologies and tools in the research process?
Is collaboration actually enhanced by the help of digital tools?
What enhances the usage of any web 2.0 technologies at work?

Submission Process
Authors are invited to submit papers with original work corresponding with one of the thematic fields described above. Papers should be submitted via the online conference system available at:
http://openaccess.tu-dresden.de/ocs/index.php/ic-escience
All papers will be peer reviewed. A selection of the best conference papers will be published by Springer. All other papers will be published as open access electronic conference proceedings.
A special track of the conference will experiment with the innovative format of a “flipped conference”. Here, presentation videos will be shared prior to the conference via an online platform, and the meeting in Leipzig will be used in innovative and productive ways – depending on the ideas of the presenters. Authors are invited to submit extended abstracts (500-1000 words) or videos that describe what they want to present and in what way they would like to present it. Successful authors will be invited to participate in the special track. All presentations in this track will be subject to public peer evaluation prior to the conference. The best rated presentation will be awarded a plenary session time slot at the conference, and will have the conference fees waived. Parallel submission to both the regular and the special track is possible.

Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
