Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Steven Seegel

"Beyond Map Literalism: Reframing the Transnational Lives and Deaths of Modern Geographers in East Central Europe."

Öffentlicher Vortrag am Herder-Institut von
Prof. Dr. Steven Seegel (University of Northern Colorado)

Steven Seegel is associate professor of history at the University of Northern Colorado, specializing in the intellectual and political history of Imperial Russia, the USSR and successor states, and modern East Central Europe. He received his Ph.D. in Russian and European History from Brown University in 2006, and he is the author of books on the history of modern East European geography, geopolitics, and critical cartography.
His first book is Ukraine under Western Eyes (Harvard University Press, 2011). It is a profile of the life and maps of Bohdan Krawciw (1904-1975), the multilingual Ukrainian poet, cultural activist, translator of Rainer Maria Rilke, and émigré journalist in North America. The project was executed while he was at the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute in 2006-2007, where he also curated an exhibition in 2008 previewing the Krawciw Ucrainica Collection, the largest single collection of maps of Ukraine outside the country.
His second book, Mapping Europe’s Borderlands: Russian Cartography in the Age of Empire (University of Chicago Press, 2012), was nominated in spring 2013 for the Joseph Rothschild Prize of the Association for the Study of Nationalities.
His third project, Map Wars, is a microstudy of the entangled modern lives and transnational careers of six geographers across East Central Europe, from the 1870s to the 1950s.
