Yet, not much is known about India’s foreign policy priorities and perceptions in Germany. The singular mix of idealism and pragmatism that has characterised Indian foreign policy over the past several decades is puzzling to many Western observers. India has pursued a policy of strategic autonomy and cooperation with different partners – from the United States and the EU to Russia and Iran, to the other emerging powers – without binding itself too closely to any one of them.
Experts from the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), India’s most important security think tank and GIGA’s partner institute in India, will help us to understand India’s foreign and security policy and to gain insights into New Delhi’s approach to a range of current international issues. How does India perceive its security environment? What are the consequences of the United States’ “pivot to Asia”? What is India’s take on recent events in Ukraine? How does India’s energy diplomacy shape its relations with countries in the Middle East and Central Asia?

Einladung zum GIGA Gespräch: Aufstieg einer Weltmacht: Wie Indien die Welt sieht
Indien hat sich zu einem Global Player in der internationalen Politik entwickelt. Es ist das I in BRICS, strebt einen ständigen Sitz im UN-Sicherheitsrat an, ist der weltgrößte Waffenimporteur und einer der wichtigsten Teilnehmer an Peacekeeping-Operationen der Vereinten Nationen. Allerdings wissen wir in Deutschland nicht viel über die außenpolitischen Ziele und Wahrnehmungen dieser aufsteigenden Weltmacht.
Westliche Beobachter reagieren häufig mit Unverständnis auf die eigentümliche Mischung aus Idealismus und Pragmatismus in der indischen Außenpolitik. Das Land verfolgt eine Politik der „strategischen Autonomie“ und hat in den vergangenen Jahren geschickt seine Zusammenarbeit mit den unterschiedlichsten Akteuren ausgebaut – ohne sich zu stark an die einzelnen Partner wie USA, EU, Russland, Iran oder die anderen aufstrebenden Großmächte zu binden.
Beim GIGA Gespräch werden ExpertInnen des renommierten Think Tank Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA) aus Neu-Delhi Einblicke in Indiens Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik und seine Haltung zu wichtigen internationalen Fragen geben. Wie schätzt Indien die Sicherheitslage in seiner Region ein? Was sind die Folgen des „Pivot to Asia“ der USA? Was ist Indiens Haltung zur Krise in der Ukraine? Welche Rolle spielt die indische Energiediplomatie in den Beziehungen zu den Ländern des Mittleren Ostens und Zentralasiens?
