On 18 June 2014, the Research Training Group 1474: "Transnational Social Support" of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) and the University of Hildesheim (Institute for Social and Organizational Education) will welcome the new cohort of doctoral students in a grand opening event.
The event will take place from 2 to 5 pm at the JGU Senate Hall of the Natural Sciences Building (Senatssaal der Naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät), Johann-Joachim-Becher-Weg 21, 55128 Mainz. Guest speakers include Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Beck-Gernsheim (University of Munich) who will discuss the theme of "Transnational Family: Marriage Resource, Child Resource".
This opening event launches the third phase of the DFG-sponsored graduate program "Transnational Social Support," which began in 2008. In view of global developments, the challenges associated with social assistance cannot be handled solely by support relationships and structures offered by national states. The central focus of the research training group is the empirical study of transnational social support, analyzed both from the perspective of everyday support processes as well as social services. Research is organized around three key research areas: "Family Care," "Community based social support," and "Social Security & Intervention."
Until 2017, fifteen doctoral students and four postdoctoral researchers will investigate processes of social support occurring across national boundaries.
