Computer sind aus der medizinischen Forschung schon lange nicht mehr wegzudenken. Mit Hilfe von Algorithmen lassen sich typische Muster krankhafter Veränderungen von Proteinstrukturen oder Geweben erkennen und auswerten, was den Weg zur richtigen Therapie erleichtert. Doch gerade bei medizinischen Daten sind der Schutz der Persönlichkeit und die Wahrung der Anonymität essentiell.
Thomas Lengauer hat unter anderem bioinformatische Modelle der HIV-Infektion entwickelt. In seinem Vortrag spricht er über Methoden und Ziele der Informatik für die Medizin und stellt sich der Frage, wie mehr Medizin aus dem Computer zum Wohl der Patienten eingesetzt werden kann und wo Vorsicht geboten ist.
