One of the most amazing facts about life is its spectacular complexity. Even decades into the molecular biology revolution this still exceeds our wildest imagination. Already the most basic building block of life, the cell, is filled with molecular machines and systems that are complex to a point far beyond our appreciation. This complexity grows exponentially as cells form communities and organisms and when these form societies and ecosystems. This increase of complexity can easily be seen in the process of a single cell developing into a vast, intricate multicellular organism. Likewise, the evolution of these complexities is inherently complicated.
In the upcoming PhD Symposium "Complexity of Life" we will explore the frontiers of biological complexity and furthermore address how to approach this scientifically.
The symposium will include sessions on the different levels of complexity present in biology. We will begin at the level of single cells, and then tackle the complexities of cell populations, organisms and finally that of communities.
With this broad scope of topics we hope to facilitate scientific exchange and a fresh perspective on our everyday struggle with understanding complexity.
