66. Mosbacher Kolloquium: Metals in Biology – Cellular Functions and Diseases

The traditional spring meetings of the German Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM) promote the exchange of scientific ideas and foster the education of young scientists. The scientific theme of the 66th meeting from March 26th to 28th, 2015, is “Metals in Biology: Cellular functions and diseases”.
The scientific organizers are Prof. Dr. Roland Lill, Marburg, Prof. Dr. Martina Muckenthaler, Heidelberg und Prof. Dr. Ralf-R. Mendel, Braunschweig.

Metals are of utmost importance for all living organisms, because they assist important cellular processes of life such as energy production, enzyme catalysis, and the maintenance of genome integrity. At elevated concentrations, however, metals can become detrimental for the cell because of their high reactivity that may lead to toxic reactions such as the formation of radicals or the inhibition of protein binding sites. Therefore, the uptake, storage, intracellular distribution and protein insertion of metals has to be tightly regulated. In recent years many of the intricate molecular mechanisms underlying these processes have been discovered. Numerous metal transporters, metal storage proteins, metallochaperones, and assembly factors support all these diverse processes. Only their intimate cooperation and crosstalk ensures proper metalloprotein homeostasis and creates a healthy cell.

Functional impairment of any of these complex pathways or of the participating proteins may lead to severe human diseases with hematological, neurological and metabolic phenotypes. For a comprehensive understanding of metal and metalloprotein function in both healthy and diseased cells, the Mosbach Colloquium 2015 on ‘Metals in Biology’ is centered at the interface of Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Biomedicine. Outstanding scientists from Germany, Europe and the US will meet to discuss the latest findings in this research field.

Major progress has recently been made in our understanding of cellular trafficking of metal ions, and the involvement of metal ions in cellular signal transduction, enzyme function, electron transfer and protein stabilization. Considerable knowledge was gained on the assembly of metal centers in proteins, the role of metals in post-translational processing of proteins and in interorganelle communications. All relevant topics will be the focus of the meeting, presented by the world leading experts in five sessions:

- Metals in energy metabolism
- Metalloproteomics: Intracellular trafficking and homeostasis
- Biogenesis of metalloproteins
- Metals in enzyme function
- Metals in disease: Neurodegeneration, inflammation, infection and hematology

The meeting will be concentrated on trace elements including iron, copper, manganese, zinc, molybdenum and selenium.

The Mosbacher Kolloquium is the annual spring conference of the German Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM).
