Physikalisches Kolloquium an der Universität Greifswald

Im Rahmen des Physikalischen Kolloquiums hält Dr. Sebastian Loth vom Max-Planck-Institut für Struktur und Dynamik der Materie, Stuttgart, einen Vortrag zum Thema "At the quantum limit of magnetism".

Abstract: Spintronics strive to harness nanoscale magnetism for information technology and sensing applications. Inherent to this dream is the requirement to couple small nanoscopic magnets to the macro-world via electric leads. Recent advances in scanning tunneling microscopy make it possible to study the interaction between metallic surfaces and magnets even at the extreme scale of individual atoms. We use low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy to create small magnetic nanostructures of our own design atom by atom. A combination of spin-polarized imaging and fast electronic spectroscopy at GHz speed allows us to measure the nanosecond-fast magnetization dynamics of these nanostructures [1]. I will introduce how quantum magnetic phenomena emerge from the local interaction of the atoms [2] and how the metallic leads can decohere spins [3]. These effects can be harnessed for demonstrations of ultra-dense data storage and non-local measurements of the spin.

Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
