Rivka Feldhay: How the »Geisteswissenschaften« became »Madaei Haru`arch« at the Hebrew University

Vortrag am Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung. Inauguralvortrag als Honorary Member des ZfL.

Zum Thema:
This talk deals with some tensions- inherent to the humanities as a field of studies – between an epistemic commitment to truth, an ethical and political commitment to reflexivity and critique, and the quest of the arts and sciences for institutional autonomy. The first part will be a delineation of the genealogy of the problem of the humanities in three stations: the Studia Humanitatis of 14th-15th century; Kant's ideas of the freedom of philosophy; Humboldt's conceptualization of the position of the university vis-à-vis the state and the nation. The second part presents the migration of the tradition of Geisteswissenschaften to Palestine and its transformation into Madaei Haruah [literally, ›the sciences of the spirit‹] at the Hebrew University. The talk will conclude with a few words about the present and future of the humanities in Israel.

Moderation: Daniel Weidner (ZfL)
