Abstract: Biological cells have to function reliably in a variety of environments. From a physical point of view, their properties are to a great part determined by the so-called cytoskeleton, a sophisticated network built-up from filamentous proteins along with linker proteins and molecular motors. Our approach to understand cell function in health and disease to a greater extent is to dynamically observe structural changes in cell; we combine cell experiments with studies on purified in vitro systems in order to approach the underlying physical principles. The relevant length scales for cellular systems are nanometers to micrometers while time scales cover a large range from sub-second to hours or days. To capture exactly these scales, we combine a variety of microfluidic and microstructuring tools with parallel imaging using visible light and x-rays. I will present this general concept we pursue in our research on a number of examples ranging from the hierarchical assembly of proteins into extended filaments to x-ray imaging of living cells.

Das Greifswalder Physikalische Kolloquium wird vom Institut für Physik der Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald organisiert und gemeinsam mit dem Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik Greifswald (IPP) und dem Leibniz-Institut für Plasmaforschung und Technologie e. V. (INP) durchgeführt. Das Kolloqiuim findet in der Vorlesungszeit des Semsters jeweils am Donnerstag um 17:00 Uhr im Hörsaal des Institutes für Physik statt.
