Conference: Museums – Places of Authenticity?

On 3 and 4 March 2016, the Leibniz Research Alliance “Historical Authenticity” in Mainz is organising the international and interdisciplinary conference “Museums – Places of Authenticity?” It is aimed equally at scientists from all subject areas and other specialists from museums, collections and educational establishments. We would like to invite you to participate in this conference.

The conference “Museums – Places of Authenticity?” will examine the question of how “authenticity” can be created by means of collection and research, conservation and restoration, as well as the exhibition concept and communication work. It will focus on the following three topics:

A) Historical change of authenticity ideals from curatorial theory and practice
B) Ethics and basic principles of restoration, conservation and preparation
C) Authenticity, learning and experience: the museum as a place for communicating knowledge and science

The aim is to help reflect and develop the collection strategies, conservation and restoration practices, as well as the dialogue and communication work of museums and other collection-led research institutions. This should provide important impetuses for museum and collection practices.

The conference “Museums – Places of Authenticity?” is organised by the Leibniz Research Alliance “Historical Authenticity”, in collaboration with the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum Mainz, the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum, the Deutsches Museum München, the National Maritime Museum Bremerhaven, the Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nürnberg, the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, the Senckenberg Nature Research Society Frankfurt, the Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig Bonn, and the Knowledge Media Research Center in Tuebingen.

The Leibniz Research Alliance “Historical Authenticity” aims to analyse the public, museum and scientific definition of the authentic when dealing with the past, as well as its epistemological, cultural, social and political significance across different countries and periods.
