Conference aims, scientific background and societal context
Despite huge global efforts in the fight against infectious diseases, they still account for one fourth of all deaths, apart from major economic impact. The emergence of new pathogens and the increasing incidence of treatment-resistant infections mark the limits of our current therapeutic arsenal, and the urgent need for new anti-microbial compounds, preferably with a wide spectrum of action. The WHO also considers the increase in resistant pathogens to be one of the main health threats facing humanity.
The contribution of host determinants to infections has become increasingly evident in recent years. This has opened up a new treatment approach termed "host-directed infection therapy". Host-directed therapeutic strategies have reached a stage where they are considered a viable and potentially superior alternative to standard antibiotic or antiviral treatment.
The aim of the conference is to bring together pioneers in this emerging research area, discuss their most recent findings and future applications, as well as potential constraints of the approach for medical use. To this end, key scientists in the field as well as experts from the pharmaceutical industries will present their latest results and provide their views on the importance of new treatment strategies. Apart from placing emphasis on science, this conference also aims to raise public awareness, and we have therefore invited representatives from leading press representatives.
Harnack House is a traditional science conference venue of the Max Planck Society in the science village of Berlin-Dahlem. It offers an ideal environment for communicating and discussing cutting-edge scientific developments.

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.
You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).
Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.
You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).
If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
