Vortrag innerhalb der Seminarreihe des GRK 1947 an der Universität Greifswald

Innerhalb der Seminarreihe des GRK 1947 hält Prof. Per Lindahl, PhD, Universität Göteburg, einen Vortrag zum Thema "On the controversial role of reactive oxygen species in cancer, and the dark side of antioxidants".

Abstract
Cancer is a genetic disorder driven by oncogenic mutations, and DNA damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) is part of the underlying mechanism. Since ROS levels are kept in check by antioxidants, a widely accepted dogma is that dietary supplements containing high concentrations of antioxidants protect against cancer. However, clinical trials have not supported this view, and some even showed that antioxidants
increase cancer risk.
Recent data from our lab has begun to shed light on this paradox. We found that antioxidants accelerated the progression of lung tumors in mice and the growth of human lung cancer cell lines, and propose a simple mechanism. By reducing levels of ROS and DNA damage, antioxidants deactivate the tumor suppressor p53 and increase tumor cell proliferation. I will discuss these findings at the seminar and present recent data on the impact of antioxidants on other cancer types. I will also discuss the potential of pro-oxidant preventive cancer therapies.

Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
