Wie weit haben Bilder von Krankheit, Sterben und Tod die europäische Literatur geprägt? Diese Frage wird innerhalb der Ringvorlesung "Krankheit, Sterben und Tod im Leben und Schreiben europäischer Schriftsteller" im Fachdialog zwischen Medizin und Literatur gestellt. Dabei geht die Vorlesung sowohl systematisch als auch historisch vor, sie besieht sich Autorenbiographien ebenso wie bedeutende literarische Zeugnisse, in denen diese Phänomene menschlicher Existenz Gestalt gefunden haben.
Die aufgerufene Namenspalette ist dabei bunt. Sie reicht von Theodor Fontane und Thomas Mann über Arthur Schnitzler und Hans Fallada bis zu Ilse Aichinger, Ingeborg Bachmann, Uwe Johnson und Christoph Schlingensief. Begriffe wie Anamnese, Testament, Demenz, Palliativ- oder Bibliotherapie werden zusammengeführt mit klassischen ästhetischen Analyseverfahren.
