The conference focuses on the emergence and mobility of novel approaches in urban and regional planning. While innovation research has a long tradition in various disciplines, there are many unanswered questions on related processes in planning. The questions that will be addressed in our conference are:
– How do novel approaches emerge, further develop and emancipate from their initial backgrounds? Under which conditions are novelties in planning institutionalised? Which types of actors are involved and which strategies do they pursue?
– In how far do innovation processes develop similarly or differently in various fields of spatial planning?
– Last but not least: Which theoretical approaches can be used to conceptualise innovation processes in planning? How far must concepts, e.g. on innovations and on policy mobility, be modified in order to adequately approach the empirical processes? Which other theoretical concepts are useful in this research field?
The discussions on these urgent questions will draw along novelties in four fields of planning: urban redevelopment, regional development, neighbourhood development as well as urban design. Likewise, speakers of this international event represent different disciplines and generations.
Patsy Healey and Eugene McCann will provide inspiring keynotes.
