During various episodes of mobilization for democracy in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, protests not only failed but also gave way to violent confrontations and, eventually, civil wars. Syria, Libya, or Ukraine are among the most prominent examples for this trajectory of social movements. The aim of this lecture is to propose a theoretical explanation that specifies the conditions under which – as well as the mechanisms through which – this pattern of escalation takes place, bridging insights from the literature on the radicalization of social movements, research on the failure of democratization processes, and studies on the onset of civil war. In doing this, I will build upon the relational approach developed in contentious politics with the aim of singling out robust causal mechanisms.
