Looking East - Trend Lines in the Asia-Pacific

Rapid change in the Asia-Pacific region drives changes in the West’s relationship with Asia. Global challenges, the digital economy, shifting demographics, and China’s rise are creating new opportunities and strategic stress points. Today, the Asia-Pacific region is connected to – and impacts – the Atlantic partnership as never before, even as East Asians struggle to develop a common identity and functioning institutions.

Daniel Russel is the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs and is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. Prior to his appointment as Assistant Secretary on July 12, 2013, Mr. Russel served at the White House as Special Assistant to the President and National Security Council (NSC) Senior Director for Asian Affairs. During his tenure there, he helped formulate President Obama’s strategic rebalance to the Asia-Pacific region, including efforts to strengthen alliances, deepen U.S. engagement with multilateral organisations, and expand cooperation with emerging powers in the region.

Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
