Hannah Baader ist Permanent Senior Research Scholar am Kunsthistorischen Institut in Florenz - Max-Planck-Institut. Seit 2009 leitet sie gemeinsam mit Gerhard Wolf und Avinoam Shalem das Forschungsprogramm "Art, Space, Mobility in Early Ages of Globalization. The Mediterranean, Central Asia and The Indian Subcontinent 400-1650". Außerdem ist sie Ko-Direktorin des Forschungs- und Stipendienprogramms "Connecting Art Histories in the Museum. The Mediterranean and Asia", ein gemeinsames Projekt der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin und des Kunsthistorischen Instituts Florenz. Aktuell forscht sie zu maritimen Dimensionen von vormodernen globalen Austauschprozessen sowie zur Kunst und Ikonologie des Meeres.
Die Veranstaltung ist zugleich der öffentliche Start des Forschungsprojektes "Batumi, Odessa, Trabzon. Kulturelle Semantik des Schwarzen Meeres aus der Perspektive östlicher Hafenstädte" (gefördert von der VolkswagenStiftung 2016–2018).
