Over the past decade the Australian Government has invested over $2.8 billion to deliver world-class research infrastructure. This has attracted more than $1 billion in co-investment from state and territory governments, universities, research facilities and industry. A substantial part of this investment was dedicated to computing, data and network resources, sensor networks, and to the creation of eResearch services. These resources and services enable research on a large scale.
Amassing data in boxes should not be the aim. Added value comes from data analytics, which are offered as services in Virtual Research Environments and as High Performance Data services. In particular the colocation of High Performance Computing with High Performance Data and the provisioning of cloud infrastructures for research opens new pathways towards adding value to this rich trove of data. CSIRO recognises the importance of extracting value and insight from data. This strategic perspective is expressed in recent changes to CSIRO’s organisational structure.
Australia is a federal state, much like Germany. Even though some of the challenges faced by Australia are quite different to Germany, some pattern may be transferrable between the two countries.
