How forests are changing

Dr. Don Waller, ecologist in the Department of Botany at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will deliver a lecture speaking about: Ecological factors driving long-term change in temperate forest plant communities.

"My career has progressed from uncontroversial subjects like why plants have sex into conservation biology, community ecology, and now metacommunity dynamics. I am now motivated to study the often subtle, complex, and cumulative forces that threaten plants and animals. My interests and passion for conserving forests and wildlife have also led me into controversies over how we should manage forests and deer." Don Waller

Various stresses alter the composition, structure, and function of many ecosystems. Temperate forests are often assumed to resist these stresses because they are adapted to disturbances and support low plant diversity. Long-term data, however, are scarce and forests tend to change slowly, making it difficult to test this assumption.

Our resurveys of hundreds of sites initially surveyed by John Curtis and his students in the 1950s reveal several patterns of long-term ecological change across Wisconsin's forests. Species differ in how they have shifted in distribution and abundance over the past 50-60 years. Both alpha and beta diversity have declined across most sites, but sites differ in the nature and extent of change.

Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
