Günther Schulz studierte Geschichte und Germanistik an der Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, wo er 1977 promoviert wurde. 1990 folgte die Habilitation. Seit 2000 ist er Leiter der Abteilung Verfassungs-, Sozial- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte des Instituts für Geschichtswissenschaft an der Universität Bonn. Sein Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt auf der Sozial- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts.
