Johann-Wolfgang Wägele studierte Zoologie, Meeresbiologie und Chemie an der Universität Kiel, wo er 1980 im Fach Spezielle Zoologie promoviert wurde. Ab 1981 baute er das Labor für Elektronenmikroskopie an der Universität Oldenburg auf. 1991 erhielt er eine Professur für Systematik und Morphologie der Tiere an der Universität Bielefeld, ab 1996 hatte er den Lehrstuhl für Spezielle Zoologie an der Universität Bochum inne. Seit 2004 ist er Direktor des Zoologischen Forschungsmuseums Alexander Koenig in Bonn und Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Spezielle Zoologie an der Universität Bonn.
