In der mittelalterlichen Kunst der Kirche wurden oft Abendmahl und Fußwaschung zusammen in ein Bild gesetzt. Abendmahl meint:
Da bildet Christus einen Leib mit vielen Menschen, eine brüderlich-schwesterliche Gemeinschaft.
Aber es ist nicht irgendeine Gemeinschaft. Was sie auszeichnet, ist die Fußwaschung. So formt die Eucharistie eine Gemeinschaft, die sich niederbeugt zu jenen Menschen, die in ihrem Leben „schlecht zu Fuß sind“.
Wer sich in die eucharistische Gottesgefahr begibt, geht aus der Feier anders hinaus, als er hineingegangen war.
