Climate change, land degradation & desertification

The German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) has the privilege and pleasure to welcome Lindsay C. Stringer of the renowned Sustainability Research Institute of University of Leeds, UK, to present her new book Land Degradation, Desertification and Climate Change: Anticipating, assessing and adapting to future change (Earthscan 2016, with Mark S. Reed).

Lindsay C. Stringer of the renowned Sustainability Research Institute of University of Leeds, UK, will present her new book Land Degradation, Desertification and Climate Change: Anticipating, assessing and adapting to future change (Earthscan 2016, with Mark S. Reed).

Climate change and land degradation are closely interlinked and most acutely experienced by ecosystems and resource-dependent populations in regions affected by desertification and drought. It is essential to understand and address the dual challenges of climate change and land degradation if we are to meet some of the main objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: to tackle poverty, to fight hunger, to sustainably manage land and water resources and to respond to the challenges of climate change.

While authoritative knowledge exists about land degradation and climate change, much less is known about the nexus that interlinks both processes and its effects. How are climate change and land degradation currently interacting in different social-ecological systems around the world? How may they be expected to interact under different scenarios in the future? The numerous and often contradictory feedbacks inherent in both processes, operating differently in different habitats and under different forms of land management, means that links between climate change and land degradation are highly complex and difficult to predict.

Lindsay C. Stringer will highlight a number of potentially important impacts of the climate-desertification-nexus on social-ecological systems in affected regions. She will discuss the implications for adaptation and policy-making by taking an interdisciplinary and integrated approach to climate change and land degradation that reflects the interlinkages between biophysical and human drivers, impacts and responses.
