US Election 2016: Young voters' discontent and the future of mainstream parties

Panel Discussion with Mark Kayser (Hertie School of Governance), Sudha David-Wilp (German Marshall Fund Berlin), and Cristina Gonzalez (Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program alumna).
Moderation: Charlotte Potts (Deutsche Welle).

This event is hosted in cooperation with the Robert Bosch Foundation Alumni Association.

The election for Barack Obama motivated young Americans to get involved and go to the polls in unprecedented numbers. But eight years later, what is the state of these young voters? Will politicians like Bernie Sanders better represent future candidates? Who stands for conservative Millenials? The dynamics of this presidential election and demographic changes in America have many wondering: what do young voters think about the future of their political system?

Amid shifting demographics in America, deteriorating public trust in institutions, and rising public discontent, there is a need to understand the issues driving a contest that has drawn not only heightened national but international attention, and the implications for the next Administration and beyond. However, as Election Day draws near, the tenor and tone of the election discourse and the overwhelming media focus on the personalities of the two candidates have in part distracted from key questions the next administration, the two major political parties, and the country as a whole must face. Younger generations of voters, perhaps more than any other generation, will be affected by the answers to these key questions.

This is the chance to discuss what’s at stake for America’s younger voters and their future within the American political system.
