We have the right to self-determination. We have the right to freedom of thought, expression and religion, to security, a fair trial, the principle of the presumption of innocence, and to protection from persecution or torture. We also have the right to education, property and an adequate standard of living. We have all those rights irrespective of our place of residence or religion, whether we are male or female, rich or poor - but simply because we are human beings.
Still, we should not take that for granted. In dictatorships and authoritarian regimes, basic rights are often abused and inhumane conditions prevail. But even in democracies and constitutional states within the EU and the western world, fundamental rights are being restricted and ignored. Recent examples, such as infringements at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility or degrading treatment of refugees at the Hungarian border, prove this.
Martin Klingst, senior political correspondent with DIE ZEIT, presents his latest book 'Menschenrechte' and comments on the status of fundamental rights around the globe. He explains setbacks, chronicles successes and underlines: Human rights constantly have to be obtained and protected.
