Due to life-threatening heart muscle inflammation, two-year-old Chloé Caldwell from Salt Lake City in the US had to be connected to an artificial heart pump, the “Berlin Heart Pediatric Excor device” developed in Berlin. A subsequent heart transplant initially seemed the only way to save the child’s life.
But then medical data suggested that Chloé's own heart could have recovered through the mechanical relief. It seemed that the child might no longer need the device. But in the USA the "Berlin Heart" there is hardly any experience with the surgical removal of the system due to recovery of the own heart.
Therefore, Chloé's parents brought their child to Germany for surgery by ambulance jet – as the German Heart Center Berlin has performed the largest number of artificial heart pump explantation in children worldwide.
The procedure was successful. Chloé is just about to travel back home - without the artificial heart pump living with her own heart. She will she be home in America not only for Christmas but also for her third birthday on December 22nd.
Chloé's parents want to go public in order to draw attention in the US to the message that for some children- albeit only few – recovery of the own heart can be an alternative strategy to heart transplantation.
Therefore, we cordially invite you to meet Chloé, her parents and the attending physicians, if you would like to report on this process which is unique worldwide:
