Was Alexander von Humboldts weltumspannendes Opus magnum „Kosmos“ in der Welt der Wissenschaften, ist auf musikalischem Gebiet Gustav Mahlers 8. Sinfonie: mit anderthalb Stunden Spieldauer eine der umfangreichsten Sinfonien überhaupt, ein Werk, in dem nach Mahlers Vorstellung „das Universum zu tönen und zu klingen beginnt.“ Vier Ensembles der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) erarbeiten unter der Leitung von Universitätsmusikdirektor Constantin Alex diese so genannte „Sinfonie der Tausend“. Sie leisten damit einen Beitrag zum 250. Geburtstag von Alexander von Humboldt und feiern zugleich 25-jähriges Jubiläum. Die Sinfonie wird am 12.02.2019 im Konzerthaus Berlin sowie am 14.2.2019 in der Philharmonie Berlin aufgeführt. Karten sind an den Vorverkaufsstellen des jeweiligen Veranstaltungsorts erhältlich.
