Recurring post-election violence in Kenya and how partners can help stabilise the country

In his talk, Lazarus Kubasu Nolasco will cover the 2007 and 2017 elections, identifying similarities of the two election processes and reviewing lesson learnt since 2007.

The researcher will analyse the recurring perception that elections were not free and fair and led to violence afterwards. He also will present on the initiatives that have been put in place since 2007 to improve elections management and the handling of post-election violence. Finally, he will identify the gaps and give recommendations of what the government of Kenya and partner countries such as Germany as well as the EU need to do to stabilise the country.
Lazarus Kubasu Nolasco is a conflict researcher. He has worked as a conflict specialist with the government of Kenya, USAID/ARD, World Bank and did a pre-election conflict study with the financial support of the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung. In the Brown Bag Lecture, he will present the findings of this study.
The talk on 15 May 2019 is taking place in the framework of BICC’s Brown Bag Lecture Series “Displacement and Development” which aims to interlink conflict and displacement studies on the one hand and development respectively humanitarian aid-oriented analyses on the other.
