Ziel der Veranstaltungen ist es unter anderem, der Öffentlichkeit einen Einblick in die wissenschaftliche Exzellenz, die Studienmöglichkeiten, Berufsperspektiven und gesellschaftliche Relevanz der kleinen Fächer zu geben.
Der Abend des 16. Oktobers eröffnet die Kleine Fächer-Wochen an der Universität Bamberg mit Vortrag und Podiumsdiskussion. Universitätspräsident Prof. Dr. Dr. habil. Godehard Ruppert, Prof. Dr. Markus Behmer (Dekan der Fakultät Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften) und Prof. Dr. Mechthild Dreyer (Leitung der Mainzer Arbeitsstelle Kleine Fächer) diskutieren über hochschulpolitische Aspekte zu den kleinen Fächern – im Allgemeinen und natürlich auch am Beispiel Bambergs. Die Moderation übernimmt Johannes Grotzky, Honorarprofessor für Osteuropawissenschaften, Kultur und Medien an der Universität Bamberg und ehemaliger Hörfunkdirektor des Bayerischen Rundfunks in München.
