Science, Culture, and Postcolonial Narratives
Be it environmental justice or the management of pandemics: Science is at the core of problems which have far-reaching social implications worldwide. The role of the natural sciences is ambivalent: they can solve environmental problems, but they can also create them. They are seen by some as a symbol of colonial oppression, but at the same time they can pave the way for the modernization of a society. But how the role of science is viewed in societies in different regions across the world, is often shaped by journalistic, literary, pop cultural or even scientific narratives. An international conference at the University of Oldenburg is now taking a closer look at how these narratives reflect the entanglements between science and society in different cultural contexts.
The virtual conference "Science, Culture, and Postcolonial Narratives," co-hosted by the German Association for Anglophone Postcolonial Studies, will take place from May 13 to 15. It brings together more than 100 scholars from all six continents, including Zimbabwean author Petina Gappah and Canadian-Indian author Jaspreet Singh. Participants will discuss, among other things, how narratives in books, films or public debates represent, for example, climate change or global biodiversity loss in different cultures. In what ways do the stories open up new perspectives on current challenges? The conference brings together the perspectives of postcolonial studies in cultural and literary studies with those of science studies. “We would like to enable a broader discourse on the relationship between science and society beyond the Euro-American sphere”, says Oldenburg literary scholar Prof. Dr. Anton Kirchhofer, who organized the conference together with his colleague Dr. Karsten Levihn-Kutzler.
The conference is supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science (MWK) and the Universitätsgesellschaft Oldenburg e.V. (UGO). It ties in with the project "Fiction meets Science," funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, in which scholars from Oldenburg are cooperating with researchers at the University of Bremen and the Hanse Institute of Advanced Study Delmenhorst (HWK).
