The thesis of the event is that internal social conflicts must always be understood together with foreign policy and foreign economic developments. The connection between (non-)state security apparatuses such as the military, (border) police, intelligence services, armed groups, security companies, economic infrastructure, and their production and maintenance, will be explored. The transnational economic practices of German and Arab intelligence services are to be examined, as well as the effects of supply chain law and the control of transnational value chains. The political aspects of solar energy projects in the Arab world will be discussed by way of example, and the deployment of the German armed forces in Mali will be subjected to a critical political-economic analysis.
The conference "About value chains and security apparatuses: On the relationship between security and economic policy in the International Order" is organised by Sophia Hoffmann (Professor of International Politics and Conflict Studies, University of Erfurt) and Kai Koddenbrock (Junior Research Group Leader, Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence, University of Bayreuth) within the framework of the Section for International Relations of the German Political Science Association, and will take place at Alexander-von-Humboldt-Haus, Bayreuth. The Africa Mulitple Cluster of Excellence, the Politics of Money Research Network, and the Volkswagen Foundation are funding the conference. It will take place on 24 and 25 February 2022.
