Gender-Just Climate Solutions: Bottom-up Approaches to Systemic Change

This lecture will focus on showcasing examples on how womxn in all their diversity have proven to develop climate adaptation and mitigation strategies that respond to the specific needs of their communities and seek for climate justice.

Climate change is not gender-neutral. People’s vulnerabilities vary according to gender, but also by ethnicity, religion, class, and age conditions. This is evidenced by gender-differentiated impacts of climate change, as well as restrictions on access, control and management of financial and technological resources and spaces for political participation to effectively tackle the climate crisis. These constraints, based on cultural norms, stereotypes and discriminatory practices, are mainly imposed to women in all their diversity. Despite the significant roles that womxn and men play as agents of change, womxn’s vulnerability continues to predominate discourses on development and climate change. Tackling the current climate crisis requires an intersectional and feminist approach to transform such barriers and find an inclusive and just way to fight climate change.

Evidence is emerging to suggest that solutions and responses to the climate crisis already exist on the ground, and these are gender-responsive and community-based. This lecture will focus on showcasing examples on how womxn in all their diversity have proven to develop climate adaptation and mitigation strategies that respond to the specific needs of their communities and seek for climate justice. They have developed a range of coping strategies in response to risks and environmental impacts and have promoted the use of traditional knowledge for resilient agriculture, water source protection, energy production and economic diversification. Gender-just climate solutions are bottom-up initiatives that are decentralized, safe, context-base, affordable, sustainable, replicable, promote equal access to benefits, do not burden womxn, entail multiple benefits, and centre local decision-making.

Gina Cortés Valderrama is a Colombian feminist who advocates for just and gender-responsive climate action from a decolonial and intersectional approach. She is part of the Colombian collective Aluna Minga in Munich and has received several distinctions from the Heinrich-Böll Stiftung (Germany), Tsinghua University (China), among others.
