Moderation: Dr. des Karin Reichenbach (GWZO Leipzig)
The Lithuanian-American archaeologist Marija Gimbutas (1921-1994) is probably best known for her hypothesis of the prehistoric European civilization, which was peaceful, egalitarian, ruled by women and centered around the Great Goddess of Nature. Praised by the American cultural feminists and often harshly criticized in conservative academia, Gimbutas remains a highly contested figure to this day and her legacy, especially in Lithuania, is surrounded by many question marks regarding her »feminism«. This lecture will present some insights from a forthcoming monograph dedicated to life, work, and the transnational reception of Marija Gimbutas, and will discuss the promises and challenges in reclaiming such a historical figure for progressive movements in Eastern Europe and beyond.
Rasa Navickaitė is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions postdoctoral fellow at the University of Vienna, working on the project entitled "Modernization of Sexuality and the Construction of Deviance in Soviet Lithuania (MoSeLit)". She is a historian of gender and sexuality with a focus on Eastern European region in a transnational perspective.
