A Journey Called Diaspora: The Armenian Culture in Ukraine (from the 17th until early-20th centuries)

The lecture begins with a journey around the global Armenian diaspora. Based on the outcomes of the Armenian Diaspora Survey 2019, this journey highlights the diversity and some of the characteristics of multilayered diasporic life that shape the Armenian world in the 21st century. The last station of this journey will be the multicultural historical Ukrainian lands, which have provided shelter to numerous immigrants from many other countries for centuries. The Armenian diaspora was one of Ukraine’s oldest and historically significant diasporas. The first Armenian trading posts appeared on the Black Sea coast and in Crimea no later than the 10th century. Meanwhile, the presence of Armenian religious communities and proselytism trace back to the 5th century. Armenians played a significant role in Ukraine’s social and cultural life. Therefore, the history of the Armenians in Ukraine is also the history of Ukraine.
Iryna Haiuk is a professor of arts at Lviv National Academy of Arts and is currently a Fellow in the Visiting Research Program for Ukrainian Scientists at the GWZO.
Hakob Matevosyan is a cultural sociologist with research expertise on the Armenian diaspora and a researcher at the department “Entanglements and Globalisation” at the GWZO.

Seit dem 24. Februar 2022 führt die Russländische Föderation einen offenen Angriffskrieg gegen die Ukraine, der auf die Zerstörung der ukrainischen Eigenstaatlichkeit abzielt.
Unsere Ringvorlesung bietet Vorträge zur Geschichte der heutigen ukrainischen Gebiete, von der Archäologie bis zur Zeitgeschichte, mit jeweils unterschiedlichen Schwerpunkten. Die Reihe beginnt mit einer prominent besetzten Podiumsdiskussion zu Völkerrechtsfragen des aktuellen Kriegs gegen die Ukraine. Ein Höhepunkt ist die Jahresvorlesung, für die wir die britisch-ukrainische Autorin und Historikerin Olesya Khromeychuk gewinnen konnten. Sie fragt nach den historischen Wurzeln des Verständnisses von Freiheit im überfallenen Land. Unsere weiteren Referent*innen benutzen Weinkonsum, Getreide, Schlachten, Musik und Denkmäler als Linse, um in die komplexe Geschichte der Region einzuführen. Eine Besonderheit der Ringvorlesung im Wintersemester 2022–23, die eine Fortsetzung der im Sommersemester bereits begonnenen Reihe ist, damals mit literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlichem Fokus, sind die Referent*innenteams: Wir laden Sie zu Veranstaltungen ein, bei denen Mitarbeiter*innen des Leibniz-Instituts für Geschichte und Kultur des östlichen Europa (GWZO) und der Universität Leipzig gemeinsam mit geflüchteten und in Leipzig temporär beheimateten ukrainischen Wissenschaftlerinnen referieren. Auch deshalb ist die Reihe auf Deutsch und Englisch.
