ECSR Thematic Conference: "COVID-19 and Social Inequality in Well-being"

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only led to cuts in social life, education, and work in the short term, but also raises questions about its long-term effects. At the Thematic Conference 2023 of the European Consortium for Sociological Research (ECSR), which will take place on August, 3-4, 2023, at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) in Bamberg, these questions, among others, will be addressed in an interdisciplinary manner.

Societal crises disrupt individuals’ lives in many different life domains because severe changes in day-to-day routines and societal subsystems like the labor market occur. This was also evident for the COVID-19 pandemic, which had not only led to cuts in social life, education, and work in the short term, but also has long-lasting implications. In addition to the obvious risks to individual health, the COVID-19 pandemic raises many questions, such as how individuals cope with these challenges and how it affects individuals' well-being in the short as well as the long run. It also raises the question of whether disruptions caused systematic disadvantages for specific parts of the society in health and well-being and how it affects social inequality in these areas in the near and distant future.

The study of these guiding questions demands the collaboration of different disciplines, as it requires a deep understanding of social strata, behavioral approaches in economics, psychological and demographic processes, institutional contexts, medical aspects, and methodology. To this end, this conference aims to bring sociologists, economists, psychologists, demographers, public health researchers, survey methodologists, and statisticians from different countries together to discuss the following topics:

Medium- and long-term effects of the pandemic on social inequalities
Changes in societal subsystems and their consequences for individuals
Causal analysis of effects of the COVID-19 pandemic
Methodological challenges for data collection and implications for research

Keynote Lectures:

Anette Fasang (HU Berlin) and Bastian Betthäuser (Science Po, Paris). Furthermore, the conference will feature a panel discussion with a keynote by Thomas Skora (gesis) and researchers in data collection and survey administration.

Submission guidelines:

We invite researchers to submit Abstracts for an oral or poster presentation of max. 1000 words (plus 3 keywords) to ecsr-tcon2023@lifbi.de by May 8, 2023. Moreover, we offer a childcare program during the main conference hours (Day 1: 9.00 am to 6 pm; Day 2: 9.00 am to 5 pm) by a professional childcare provider. Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
