Katharine Hayhoe is the chief scientist of the U.S. society The Nature Conservancy, one of the largest environmental organizations in the world, and also holds a professorship at Texas Tech University. The Canadian scientist is considered one of the leading and most prolific science communicators in the United States, particularly on the topic of climate change (for example, she has written numerous op-ed in the New York Times and took part in TED-Talks).
In Germany, too, there are heated discussions about climate protection measures. Climate-friendly transportation planning and phasing out fossil fuels are examples. However, the challenge posed by human made climate change has been outlined for decades in a large number of peer-reviewed studies and reports, e.g. by the renowned Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Until now, there has been no adequate societal response to these scientific findings. In her presentation, Prof. Katharine Hayhoe will analyze the multiple psychological, societal, political and economic causes for this divergence. She then wants to show possible solutions how even a pluralistic society can agree on generally accepted climate protection measures on the basis of common values.
