Marine Regions Forum 2023: Navigating ocean sustainability in the Western Indian Ocean and beyond

The health of our oceans is more critical than ever, requiring accelerated action and joined forces to address the manifold issues and challenges ahead. The Marine Regions Forum 2023 provides an inclusive, informal platform for collaborative engagement across sectors and regions. Operating outside of the usual silos and formal processes, participants will gather to address urgent challenges and chart impactful actions aimed at preserving marine ecosystems for people and planet.

Dedicated to forging pathways towards a thriving ocean, the Marine Regions Forum 2023 will focus on the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region while facilitating exchanges with other marine regions. It aims to develop clear recommendations, catalyse action, and build partnerships for stronger regional ocean governance, making a timely contribution to key ocean governance policy processes – from the local, regional, to global level.

The conference has been developed collaboratively with international and regional partners, particularly the Nairobi Convention Secretariat. It draws on the successes and insights gained during the inaugural Marine Regions Forum in 2019 in Berlin.

Guided by a daily theme, inclusivity (day 1), innovation (day 2), and implementation (day 3), the conference program will delve into topics that include:
• Tackling the Triple Planetary Crisis – climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss
• Fostering a sustainable blue economy
• Implementing global objectives at the regional level
• Regional Ocean Governance

You can find the tentative programme of the Marine Regions Forum 2023 below and on our website. Please note: plenaries are open to the press, but the parallel sessions are closed for press reporting to ensure open exchange between participants.

See program in the appendix.

The Marine Regions Forum in the Western Indian Ocean is co-funded by the European Union and the Swedish Ministry of Climate and Enterprise and German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection. The Marine Regions Forum 2023 conference in the Western Indian Ocean is being developed in partnership with the Nairobi Convention Secretariat and various partners.
