Early Career Workshop: Cities, Natures, Infrastructures

Pre- and postdoctoral Workshop

Hillary Angelo, University of California, Santa Cruz

Haus der Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets, Clemensstr. 17-19, 44789 Bochum

HILLARY ANGELO is an urban and environmental sociologist and Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She studies understandings of the environment and their relationship to large-scale spatial and social transformations, through historical and contemporary research on urban greening, sustainability planning and policy, infrastructure, and climate change.

Her work is particularly attuned to the politics of the built environment: how natural and human-made environments mediate experience to produce particular understandings of society. Her recent book, How Green Became Good: Urbanized Nature and the Making of Cities and Citizens (The University of Chicago Press, 2021), examines the construction of a new social imaginary in Germany’s Ruhr Valley that pivots on the moral good of the green. Her new research focuses on public lands as a key site to ask and answer questions about the climate crisis, social crisis, and paths of social change in the 21st century.

As Visiting International Professor at the Ruhr University Bochum, Hillary Angelo invites interdisciplinary discussion of how to think with nature, city and society in a new key. Pre- and Postdoctoral students across faculties who work in allied fields have the opportunity to workshop their research with Hillary Angelo. Registered participants will receive a short work to read in preparation for the discussion of their project.
