Biweekly Colloquium: "Warfare and Storms: Human-Caused and Natural Impacts on Urbanism. [...]"

"[...] In the Early Historic Period of the Indian Subcontinent"

Monica L. Smith (University of California, USA)

The early Indian subcontinent was a place of dramatic environmental fluctuations that included monsoon seasons and occasional cyclonic storms. There were also significant events of warfare as documented in texts. Yet rather than viewing these events as “catastrophes,” can we think of warfare and destructive storms as offering an opportunity for specific kinds of risk management that have a positive effect on the organization of daily life? Does preparation for future disaster yield some comfort and satisfaction in the present? This is a philosophical as well as an economic and social question,
explored through the study of urbanism in the Indian subcontinent during the Early Historic period (c. 3rd c. BCE – 4th century CE).
