The People's Republic of China is central to current debates about power shifts in international organizations. While pundits – particularly in the West – argue that China has been taking over the United Nations (UN), a systematic assessment of China’s engagement with the UN system has been missing. This talk presents and discusses findings from a recent Global Policy Special Issue on whether and how China-related power shifts have unfolded at the UN over the last two decades. The analysis focuses on empirical insights from the UN's three main pillars: peace and security, development, and human rights. It also covers UN relations with China’s Belt and Road Initiative as well as more recent Chinese attempts to promote the Global Development Initiative.
