Rethinking ‚normal‘: changing perspectives on mental health and illness

In her lecture, Prof. Claire Gillan (Trinity College Dublin) discusses a dimensional framework for mental health, the growing concept of neurodiversity, and related evolutionary perspectives in psychiatry.

There has been decades of research investigating the brain mechanisms of mental health disorders. What we‘ve learned has been surprising – there is no anxiety disorder gene, no one brain region that causes schizophrenia, and depression can‘t be explained by a lack of serotonin. Not only are these mechanisms more complex than anyone anticipated, we are increasingly learning just how blurred the lines between health and illness really are. In this talk, Prof. Gillan explores why this is. Discussing a dimensional framework for mental health, the growing concept of neurodiversity and related evolutionary perspectives on psychiatry.
