Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine: contemporary conflicts dominate headlines across the German and European media landscape, yet global perspectives on these crises are still largely shaped by Western voices. From the war in Ukraine and Middle Eastern geopolitics to security challenges in Africa – how do scholars, policymakers, and ordinary citizens across the Global South understand these events?
This panel brings together policymakers and experts on Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East to discuss analytical perspectives that are often missing from European debates. The discussion will explore how historical experiences of colonialism, regional power dynamics, and differing strategic priorities shape how conflicts are perceived, interpreted, and addressed in respective Global South countries. The panel will also consider what these insights mean for German foreign policy – for ambitions to engage on equal terms, and for avoiding misunderstandings and misplaced expectations.
