Focus on the Alps
The European Alps are among the most densely populated mountain regions in the world, and due to the large urban areas in the Alpine foothills, e.g. tourism intensity (overnight stays per inhabitant) in some Alpine regions ranks among the highest internationally. Existing and potential future problems arising from high pressure of use and natural and societal changes are being addressed through dynamic, interdisciplinary research and associated exchange formats such as RMC2026.
Thematic Focuses
A focus of RMC2026 is the impact of climate change on future weather and on drought, as well as water management in the Alpine region and its foothills. Another focus area is alpine forests—ranging from their regenerative capacity to the already contested role of forests as CO2 sinks. Of course, the conference also covers various topics related to natural hazards—such as why local stakeholders should be involved in the planning stages of relevant research projects. A major session is also dedicated to the topic of social sustainability in alpine tourism.
Numerous other well-known topics (e.g., biodiversity and land-use pressure) and lesser-known but equally relevant topics (e.g., climate change and alpine livestock farming) will be addressed in additional sessions, workshops, and keynote presentations. Furthermore, on Saturday (this event will be in German language), July 4, and Sunday (German and English language), July 5, events for and in collaboration with the general public will take place in Obergurgl as part of a pre-conference program.
For Journalists
The events offer an opportunity to engage with experts in mountain research in the Alpine region and stakeholders. The RMC team is happy to assist journalists in identifying and developing topics as well as arranging interview partners.
