Helmut K. Anheier (Hertie School of Governance) and Ekkehard Thümler (Heidelberg Centre for Social Investment) present their two newest books:
| “Non-Profit Organisations – Theory, Management, Policy” by Helmut K. Anheier |
The book takes on an international and comparative dimensions perspective, detailing the background and concepts behind non-profit organizations and examining relevant theories and central issues. Anheier covers the full range of nonprofit organizations - service providers, membership organizations, foundations, community groups - in different fields, such as arts and culture, social services and education. He introduces central terms such as philanthropy, charity, community, social entrepreneurship, social investment, public good and civil society, whilst explaining how the field spills over from public management, through nonprofit management and public administration. The previous edition won the Best Book Award at the American Academy of Management in 2006. Nonprofit Organizations: Theory, Management, Policy is an ideal resource for students on undergraduate and postgraduate courses in both Europe and North America.
| "Philanthropy and Education: Strategies for Impact" by Ekkehard Thümler, Annelie Beller, Nicole Bögelein, and Helmut K. Anheier |
The reform of public schools is high on the public agenda in Europe as well as North America. Philanthropic foundations play an increasingly important role in attempts to enhance the performance of the system. However, the degree to which their ambitious aspirations are actually realized is often very low. This book addresses the question of how philanthropic actors can make a more effective, beneficial and responsible contribution to the field of public education. It develops an innovative model of effective education philanthropy and uncovers strategies to successfully tackle problems in this complex domain. Presenting the findings of the international research project 'Strategies for Impact in Education', the results are based on six case studies from Germany, Switzerland and the United States, informed by institutional theory and drawing on state-of-the-art research in sociology, psychology and pedagogy.
