Der in Nordamerika heimische Wilde Tabak (Nicotiana attenuata) blüht des Nachts und lockt mit dem Duftstoff Benzylazeton nachtaktive Motten als Bestäuber an. Sobald aber die Mottenweibchen gefährlich werden und ihre Eier auf den grünen Blättern ablegen, aus denen gefräßige Raupen schlüpfen, verschiebt die Pflanze den Blühzeitpunkt um 12 Stunden in die Morgendämmerung und stellt außerdem die Duftproduktion der Blüten ein. Die Motten bleiben aus und als Bestäuber treten fortan vermehrt Kolibris auf.
