ZIF1-Mutante: Durch genetische Manipulation besitzt die gezeigte Pflanze eine außergewöhnlich große Menge des Nicotianamin-Transporters ZIF1, der das metallbindende Molekül von der Zellflüssigkeit in die Vakuole verlagert. Dieses Nicotianamin fehlt in der Zellflüssigkeit. In den Blattadern reichert sich dadurch Eisen an, das sich nicht in die Blattspreiten hinein verteilt. Durch diesen Eisenmangel in den Blattspreiten entsteht die gelbliche Färbung. Die Blätter der Pflanze sehen ähnlich aus wie die von Pflanzen, die gar ein Nicotianamin herstellen können.
