Das Stresshormon Abszisinsäure (ABA) schützt Pflanzen vor dem Verwelken. Unter seiner Einwirkung schließen Blätter bei niedriger Luftfeuchtigkeit ihre Spaltöffnungen und überleben (oben). Dabei wird ABA sowohl in den Schließzellen als auch in anderen Geweben gebildet. Eine Mutante, die überhaupt kein ABA mehr synthetisieren kann, wird schnell welk (Mitte). Wird in dieser Mutante nur in den Schließzellen ABA produziert (unten), verhält sie sich bei niedriger Luftfeuchtigkeit wieder wie eine normale Pflanze.
